How to reach Chilapata


Chilapata Wildlife Sanctuary and Mendabari Camp are accessible through road, rail and air. You have to take National Highway 31 to reach Chilapata if you are driving your car. By air you have to come to Bagdogra airport from where you can hire a taxi to take you to Chilapata. The easiest is however boarding a train and disembarking at Alipurduar station from where it is only an hour’s drive to Chilapata Wildlife Sanctuary. The Mendabari Jungle Camp is 2 kilometers inside the forest.

Mendabari Jungle Camp reminds one of the rural lives of our ancestors. It is absolute bliss and also undaunted thrill that you will experience here. The Elephant cottage is made with cement, brick and wood in local style standing on concrete stilts while the Bamboo cottages are more authentic ones made from eco-friendly materials capturing the traditional architecture of the tribal houses. Food is prepared from the fresh organic local produce and offers different varieties of local the local cuisine. It is served on thatched dining tables with 4 sides open to enjoy uninterrupted view of the jungle. However, you are not allowed to go out of the cottage at night on bare foot because leopards have been noticed in the zone. The Elephant cottage cost 1500 INR and the bamboo cottage comes at 1000 INR. Food is charged separately.

Attractions & Activities in Chilapata


Chilapata Wildlife Sanctuary is home to 23 species of herbivores and carnivores and around 22 species of reptiles and 180 species of birds. Some rare orchids and trees and plants are found in the forest as well. This diverse flora and fauna is nurtured by the rivers Torsha and Bania which bring in the fresh monsoon alluvial soil. Apart from Asian elephants and one horned rhinos, sambar, barking deer, wild boar, hog deer, cheetal, leopard, and monkey can be found in the forest. You will be able to spot majority of these animals from the Mendabari watchtower on wildlife safari.

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary and Khyerbari Leopard Rescue Center are close by. Mathura Tea Estate and Rabha Tribal community are the other tourist attractions near the forest. Deep within the forest lay the ruins of the fort of Nalraj. The historians are divided on the era of its construction and trace it back to 5th -7th century. Only the entrance of the fort is now visible. While returning back you will see the ‘bleeding treeknown as Ran Guna. Other activities include baoting on Bania River, angling and trekking the jungle trails.

How to reach Ramsai Forest and Eco Camp


Ramsai (ramsay) forest and eco camp can be reached through Lataguri only because the entrance through the Gorumara forest has been closed. It only takes 1 hour to drive from Lataguri to Ramsai. You can hire a sumo for which you have to pay 1000INR if it is non AC and 1200INR if it comes with AC. If you are driving by your car, take National Highway 31 and follow the route through Chalsa and Nagrakata. Alternatively, get down at New Maal station which is 30 kilometers from Ramsai or New Maynaguri which is 20 kilometers from the same venue. If you are traveling by air, then Bagdogra is the nearest airport.

Accommodation in Ramsai Forest and Eco Camp


For accommodation, you will obviously be staying at the camp which needs to be reserved beforehand. You can also stay at the Forest Inn which has been recently acquired by Ramsai. This is a private property. The Ramsai rhino camp is a relatively new one with the same offering adventure to the tourists. The properties have basic amenities including food. Fresh local fish is used to prepare fish curries which are delicious and you must try the Puti and the Boroli fish.

You can enjoy the elephant safari covering 1 kilometer into the jungle and a visit to the Medhla Tower and the tea garden at Ramsai. You can spot rhinos, elephants, bisons and wild boars from the watch tower. A unique bullock cart ride will cost 35 INR per person and take you through the small village inhabited by a few thousand people. As you explore the village and the Gorumara Park, you will realize that technology has not been able to take away from the simplicity of their lives. How to reach Klaipur Eco Resort


Gorumara is well connected with the major transport modes of the town. If you are taking the train, get down at New Jalpaiguri Station and hire a jeep/cab to travel 95 kilometers to reach Gorumara. Alternatively, the nearest airport is Bagdogra if you traveling by air which is 110 kilometers from the park.  From Jalpaiguri it is only 49 kilometers. You can either take the Maynaguri-Ramsai route about 17 kilomeetrs to Kalipur or drive through Lataguri which is 10 kilometers. The best time to visit Gorumara Kalipur Eco Resort is from the middle of October through March.  From 15th June to 15th September the park remains closed due to rain.

The cottages at Gorumara Kalipur Eco Resort are beautiful and furnished. The 4 cottages have bamboo finish and traditional built. You will get a feel of how our ancient forefathers used to live inside tree houses. The balcony offers a panoramic view of the lush green grasslands and the adjoining tea garden. The cottages providing accommodation for 2 people come at 3900 INR while the ones offering 3 bedrooms come at 5100 INR. The room charges also include food which consists of fish in lunch and chicken at dinner. The elephant trip charge is also included in this but for a bullock ride you will have to pay 35INR per head.

Attractions in Kalipur Eco Resort


While enjoying your sojourn at Gorumara Kalipur Eco Resort you can explore the park through an elephant ride. You will be taken deep into the park to the Medhla watch tower where you will spot one horned rhinos which are only found in Gorumara in the entire country. Besides, you will also find elephants, bisons and leopards sharing space with rhinos. The diversity in the national park in terms of flora and fauna is astounding. It is home to 193 species of birds, 50 species of mammals, 22 species of reptiles, 27 species of fish and 7 kinds of turtles. All these different kinds of animals inhabit the park full of sal, teak, Bombax, grassland vegetation and Shirish trees. Different types of tropical orchids can also be found at the park. Gorumara is also famous for the safaris conducted for tourists. The entry fee at Gorumara is 40 INR. To see the fauna from close quarters you can opt for safaris which you have to book from the forest department.

Jataprasad is a famous watchtower named after the legendary female elephant Jataprasad located on the northern side of the park. There is also the Rhino Point close by. Methla Watchtower is in Kalipur eco village where a unique bullock cart driven safari is available. The others include Chukchuki Watchtower, Chandrachur Watchtower and Chapramari Watchtower. Rhinos, elephants, bisons, leopards and many other animals can be spotted from the watchtowers.
