Sutan Lake: Discovering Tranquility in Bankura, West Bengal

Jore Pokhri Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the way to Sandakphu in Darjeeling District in West Bengal. It is the habitat of some high-altitude animals like Himalayan Salamander (Tylototriton verrucosus), locally known as ‘Gora’. It also houses many other local animals such as the rhino, tiger, and many different birds.

Haliday Island Wildlife Sanctuary: Exploring the Beauty of West Bengal’s Nature

Haliday Island Wildlife Sanctuary is also known as Haliday Wildlife Sanctuary. This is one of the three Wildlife Sanctuaries of the Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve, the other two being the Sajnekhali Wild Life Sanctuary and the Lothian Wildlife Sanctuary. It is located in south 24th parganas in West Bengal. The area is approximately six square kilometers.

Situated on the river Matla, many different types of flora and fauna exist within the wildlife sanctuary. Examples include spotted deer and wild boar. Royal Bengal tigers have occasionally visited the area as well.

How to reach


Nearest town is Gosaba, 50 km away. Nearest railhead is at Canning(48 km). Canning is well connected to Kolkata, by train.

Kalpokhri lake at an elevation of 3170 meters

Kalpokhri is a scared lake located at an elevation of 3170 meters. It is found enroute to the famous Sandakphu peak of Singalila Range from Gairibas. The local people believe it to be the home of the formidable Kalnaag or the huge slithering black snake. Pokhri in the local language means lake and Kaal is derived from Kaalnaag and hence Kalpokhri. The Kalpokhri contains black water and is a rare presence at such an elevation. During spring the region surrounding the black lake is full of the magnificent rhododendron and orchids. The lake doesn’t freeze even during winter because the water is muddy.

Rasikbil Bird Sanctuary

Rasikbil Bird Sanctuary is located on the foothill of Sintura Range of the Eastern Himalayas. It falls in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal and is basically a marshland or swamp which is famous for birds. The place is flocked by a large variety of birds and is therefore known as a bird sanctuary. It is spread across an area of 175 hector and also includes Aviary & Tortoise rescue center, python house, leopard house, crocodile rehabilitation center and deer park. The sanctuary can be visited throughout the year and is at a distance of 34 kilometers from Alipurduar; 45 kilometers from Cooch Behar and 212 kilometers from Siliguri.

Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary

Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Bethuadahari town. This area also knon as Nakashipara area of Nadia District in West Bengal, India. The sanctuary is located beside National Highway 34. This sanctuary covers 67 hectares and established in 1980.

This sanctuary has a large population of spotted deer (known as chital), jackal, fox, porcupine, and common langur. Bird species include parakeets, Indian cuckoos, barbets and other smaller birds. Reptiles and amphibians include pythons, monitor lizards and gharials can be spotted here. One type of small crocodile also can be seen here. The sanctuary is wonderful space for photographers and tourists. All should visit the place occasionally. The amazing rock python is the greatest attraction of the forest. This Sanctuary is a popular picnic spot too.

Ballabhpur Wildlife Sanctuary

Ballabhpur Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1977. This sanctuary is also know an deer park. This wildlife sanctuary is located near Santiniketan in Birbhum District of West Bengal. It is home to a number of deer including the Blackbuck and Spotted deer. This sanctuary covers 2 square kilometres area.

It is open from 10 am to 5 pm. It is closed on Thursdays
